Syyskuun 12. päivänä vuonna 1935 järjestettiin Ann Arborissa, Michiganissa tapaaminen, jossa päätettiin perustaa organisaatio matemaattiselle tilastotieteelle nimellä the Institute of Mathematical Statistics. Niinpä vuoden 1935 joulukuussa oli jo the Annals of Mathematical Statistics-julkaisussa kirjoitus: "For some time there has been a feeling that the theory of statistics would be advanced in the United States by the formation of an organization of those persons especially interested in the mathematical aspects of the subject."
